Domains Reach 326 Million With New Extensions Now 5% Of All Registrations

There were 326.4 million domain names registered across all extensions around the world at the end of the first quarter 2016, an increase of approximately 12 million domain names, or 3.8% over the fourth quarter of 2015, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief published by Verisign. Registrations have grown by 32.4 million, or 11%, year over year. Of these, registrations in new extensions such as .top, .review, .global and .online totalled 16.1 million, or 4.9% of all domains registered. Today there are 23 million domains registered across the 1,100 plus new extensions that have been delegated.

Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) registrations totalled 148.2 million, a 2.6% increase quarter over quarter and 8.2% year-over-year. For .com and .net, both of which Verisign is the registry operator for, there were 142.5 million registrations, a 7.1% increase year-over-year.
